On Friday 11 September 2009, a bus from Sutherland Shire Christian School in NSW had a head on collision with a car. The driver and passenger in the car died shortly after the crash. The children on the bus did not sustain any severe injuries, mainly cuts and bruises, but are understandly traumatized. The children are now all home from hospital.

Please continue to pray for the school as it works to deal with the impact on the children and the families of those involved.

Principal of the Sutherland Shire Christian School Nicola Taylor has thanked the emergency service personnel who attended the school bus accident on the Heathcote Road at Lucas Heights at around 8am this morning.

“Following the crash several of the teaching staff including my Co-Principal Andrew Middleton were quickly on the scene as they were just a few cars away from the bus,” Principal Taylor said.

“The staff were incredibly impressed with the way the ambulance paramedics, police and fire officers as well as the helicopter crews helped the victims of the accident.

“To help allay the fears of parents we were able to inform parents by mobile telephone from the scene that their children had been involved in an accident.

“This proved an enormous help for the school and parents alike,” Mrs Taylor said.

“The 37 children on the bus and three other school children who were following the bus and were uninjured were taken to various hospitals including St George, Sutherland, Liverpool, Bankstown and Westmead Children’s Hospital.

“We thank God that none of the children were critically injured and we continue to pray for the children and their families as well as the people in the other vehicle and those who witnessed the horrifying scene.

“Many of the children have now been discharged and at lunch today less than half a dozen children remain in hospital for observation.

“The students and staff of the school have been kept updated during the day and those who need counseling will have that made available.

“This has been a major event for the school and the staff have been wonderful in dealing with the children, families and emergency workers,” Mrs Taylor concluded.
